What Is a Commissioned Work?

Already understand the process? Click here to be taken directly to the commission request form.

To commission a piece of art means that the buyer discusses what they are looking for in a piece with an artist before the work is made. This allows buyers to request artwork that fits exactly what they're looking for in size, color, and style. Once the artist has an idea of what the buyer is looking for, they calculate a price for the request and communicate this to the buyer to either accept or reject. However, commissioning a work is not a bidding or negotiating process.

It is important to note that ceramic artwork in particular, whether functional or sculptural, often takes a few weeks to be completed. This is because even after the time spent creating the work (which varies based on the complexity of the piece), work must dry slowly and completely before it can be fired. Then, the work goes through two firings, which can take up to 24 hours each. Ceramic artists also must have enough dry work to fill a kiln before a firing and must also take time to glaze all work in between the first and second firing.

Commissions with Frandsen Pottery

When commissioning a piece with Frandsen Pottery, you will first fill out the form below to describe what you are looking for in as much or as little detail as you choose.

Once your request has been submitted, you should receive a confirmation email. You can expect a personalized response to your request within three days, either requesting more information or communicating the price point for your request. Price point will not include shipping costs, which can usually be estimated from the beginning but can only be finalized after the piece is complete (since the final object weight can't be determined until after the final firing). This response may also include communication about timelines, particularly if your request included a special deadline.

If you accept the price point, work on the piece will then begin. You can request photo updates throughout the process or wait to see the final product. Payment is expected unless there has been a mistake on behalf of the artist or in firing (such as a cracked or broken piece, an incorrect color application, or a mechanical issue in the kiln). Because of this, if you have a very specific request for the form, texture, or style of a piece, you may particularly wish to receive images throughout the process.

Once the work is complete, payment will be made (including any necessary shipping costs) through the format of your choice. Currently, Frandsen Pottery is accepting cash, Venmo, Ca$hApp, PayPal, and most major credit cards. Personal checks may also be considered.

If you are local to Indianapolis, an in-person drop-off or pick-up may be arranged in lieu of shipping (when possible and practical).
